The Complete Beginners Guide to Using Silicone Moulds with Epoxy Resin

Yet, in recent years, more people are using epoxy resin with moulds to create beautiful products. These moulds come in a wide range of sizes and shapes. The best bit is, no two end results will look the same.

Using Silicone moulds for epoxy resin models is not as easy as some people make it look. Keep reading for some great hints and tips for your resin mould journey.

What Is Epoxy Resin?

Epoxy resin is a product that people have started to use in a range of new and exciting ways. By mixing two separate substances, they create a chemical reaction that leads to the final solid product. These substances are liquid resin and a hardener.

By using a liquid resin alone, you will fill your moulds. Still, you won't achieve the reaction needed for the final product, defeating the point. To complete the chemical reaction, you will need to add a hardener to your liquid resin.

Ensure that you mix the two substances to a ratio of 1:1. This will create a chemical reaction that will harden over the space of a few hours or even days, depending on your project. During this process, be sure to think about your health and safety as this reaction will produce heat and could be harmful.

Silicone Molds for Epoxy Resin?

When beginning your epoxy resin journey, the ideal mould material to use is silicone. This is because silicone is a flexible and durable material allowing ease of release of the finalised product.

Once your resin reaction has been completed and you find yourself with a hardened product, you may find it difficult to release it from the mould. Due to the characteristics of silicone, you can peel the mould away from the hardened resin.

How to Use Silicone Molds

Before beginning your first resin mould, prepare your workspace. Resin can not only become highly messy, but the chemical reaction will cause fumes. These fumes can be harmful so ensure you are in a well-ventilated area.

Prepping Your Mold

Now that your workstation is prepped, you will want to prepare your mould. Cover the inside of your mould with mould release and leave this to sit for half an hour. This product will make peeling the product away from the silicone mould at the end even more effortless.

Making Your Product

Now you have prepared, you can start to create your resin project. Measure out the resin and hardener to the exact 1:1 ratio.

Add your chosen personalisation to your resin mixture and pour it into the mould. This personalisation can be such things as colouring or even glitter.

If you don't wish to add this to the resin, you can try adding it to your mould before you pour in the resin. This can give you the ability to control these additions. For example, dried flowers will be added to the mould and not the resin.

Finalising Your Product

Once your final drop of resin has been added, you now need to wait for the chemical reaction to complete. Place your product in an out of the way, safe place and cover your mould. Doing this will keep dust or other contaminants away from your project.

The length of time for this stage depends on the products you have chosen to use. Most epoxy resins will take between 12 and 72 hours. Do not rush this part, as it may ruin your final product.

Carefully peel away the mould from the resin product. Due to using the mould release, you should find this part easy. If not, use some warm, soapy water to help with the release of the product.

Hints and Tips for Beginners

We now know the basics of creating an epoxy resin mould. However, you will find there is a lot more to using epoxy resin than you may have thought. Here are some hints and tips to help you on your way.

Cloudy Surface

Using silicone moulds for epoxy resin could give your final product a cloudy look. This is due to the mould you used. If the mould has a dull look to it, the end product will look cloudy.

This can be fixed by either using a shinier mould or by using a resin gloss sealer spray. Add a few light layers to your product, and you will gain the shine you desire.

Powdered Layer

You may have seen resin moulds involving an outer layer. You can create this effect by adding a layer of powder, such as Mica Powder, to the mould before pouring in the resin. If you choose to use this effect, tap the mould before adding the resin to remove any loos dusting.
